With no kids in school, no homework to fuss over, and no meal planning I was lost at first. I would sometimes wake up in the morning and panic that I overslept and have to get my son up. Then there was a few times when the new school year started and a commercial would come on about homework and I would think “oh my gosh did he do his homework?”
Living life as an empty nester is both exciting and relaxing because I am free to go anywhere, do anything, be me and not have to worry about if I am a bad mom. It is also a sad time because my son does not need me as much.
However, a few months ago I had the chance to feel what it would be like to be a true empty nester and it was great. My son went on a trip with his dad for 4 days leaving me home alone with the dogs (and cats). Honestly, the first day was weird and I felt guilty for thinking how nice it was to walk in the kitchen for my morning cup of coffee without finding dirty dishes stacked in the sink. By the second day I was enjoying my quiet clean home with the random text and phone call from my youngest son. Life was good.
New Life
Starting my new new life as an empty nester was scary and exciting. After all, I have spent 26 years as a mom and 19 1/2 years as a wife picking up after others, grocery shopping, accountant, laundry, homework monitor, and all around fixer. Now it is my time to enjoy the quiet sitting on my deck, sipping on a margarita, petting my dogs, and watching the colors of the sunset fade in the western sky. I enjoy the quiet to read and write without interruption.
My oldest son lives in another state and my youngest son is still living at home spending hours in his room or out with friends. One day soon he will be leaving to start his adult life and I am anxiously waiting to have the house to my self. I will be alone one day but I will not be lonely because my sons will always be a call or text away. I am ready to be an empty nester at 50 living life my way.

It is nice not having to wake up, or to get home after a full day of with a mess to clean up. I don’t miss the messed, or dirty dishes.
I do miss my girls and grandkids wishing they lived closer. They are still in Texas, but Texas is a big state and they live opposite directions from each other so that makes it even harder to see them both. Other then that life is good.
It is nice to wake up to a clean house!
